If you want to put it on your site--that's all right. I guess. However, please retain my e-mail address and my name on the story. I would like to know where the story is going so I can visit it. =) Please forward to ATXC. Author's Notes: I watched the episode "3" on syndication, and I wondered what would happen if Scully really wasn't abducted and what would her thoughts be on the case. A FYI, I had written this story before I wrote the Discovery and the A Twist Of Series. This story had Scully and Mulder married before the events of the Discovery Series. In actuality, this was going to be my debut story, but then, I wrote "Discovery of Hope" which became the Discovery Series as well as my debut story. Feedback: Much appreciated and welcomed. =) Dedication: I dedicate this story to my family, friends, and to David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson. Special Thanks: To Lauren M., Kim, Dew, Carol, Simon, Kalika, Caroline, Heather, Lauren N., Liz, and Kendra for your support. Also, I would to thank my new beta reading team for helping me with this story. You know who you are, and I'm grateful for helping and giving me encouragement when needed. Summary: See how a little twisting of events would change things. Scully isn't abducted as she's married to Mulder, and have twin girls. ---------------------------------------- A LITTLE TWIST OF THREE by: Erin M. Blair ---------------------------------------- "I swear that it's an X-File," Fox Mulder said to his wife/partner, Dana Scully-Mulder. They were in their basement at the J. Edgar Hoover building going over the new case. "It's not. It's just a murder. Let the Violent Crimes Section have a go at it. They can call us in if it really is an X-File. We had been separated for a few months, and I don't think that we should waste our time with something that's not an X-File," Scully replied, sighing. she thought to herself. Mulder and Scully had been separated for three months because of Scully's maternity leave after giving birth to their identical twin daughters, Emily and Dana. Scully walked over to the file cabinet, and pulled out a file of her own. She wore a sad expression on her face while she read the file: "Scully, Melissa." Her sister, Melissa Scully, had been abducted by Duane Barry. She put her sister's crystal necklace and her bracelet in the file. Mulder noticed his wife's sad expression, and he hugged her. "I know how you feel, Scully. We will find her. I promise you." "Missy was protecting me. She was in my apartment when it happened. It should have been me!" Scully exclaimed, as she cried on her husband's shoulder. "I know, but it wasn't you. You couldn't do anything to prevent it. I know you tried to be there for her..." "But I *wasn't* there for her! I could hear it all on our answering machine...the screams...her calling out my name... "Dana!!!! HELP!!!!"...I will *never* forget that; ever! By the time we got to the scene, she was gone!!" "I am sure that she knows, deep down, that we tried everything to help," Mulder replied, soothingly. He stroked her auburn hair, and then he massaged her back to calm her. He knew that she was feeling guilty over her sister's abduction. He remembered his own sister's abduction and how guilt-ridden he felt. "It's not your fault, Dana..." "Logically, I know that. The truth is that in my heart---I don't. I can't help but feel that it's my fault. I let her stay alone at the apartment, and I gave her the metal implant from the hostage scene to hold on to," Scully replied. "I should have kept it...taken it to the labs myself but..." "*Dana*, you were on maternity leave; a strict maternity leave because of the birth of little Dana and Emily," Mulder answered. "The reason you couldn't go was because as your supervisor and your partner, I wouldn't let you. And as your husband, and the father of our children, I couldn't let anything to happen to you on the way there. I know it's selfish of me, Scully, but you know how much I love you." He paused. "Melissa was eager to help with the case. I'm grateful to her, and I know how proud you were of her. She knew that there were risks involved in helping us. Scully, she knew that you were very limited as far as the conditions of your maternity leave." "I know that, Mulder. I remember how badly Missy wanted to help us. Still, I just wish...that Duane Barry hadn't had the guts to kidnap her. All I want to do is to find her. I want to find out the reasons," Scully paused, as she went over to the portable crib to see their identical twin daughters. She smiled, gazing at their girls, both so lovely and peaceful in sleep. The twins shared their mother's cream complexion, auburn hair color, and smile. Their eyes were a shade of blue-green, but that could change over time to hazel like their father's. "We will, Dana. I promise you," Mulder replied, as he walked over to see his wife holding little Dana, while he carefully picked up little Emily. "They look just like you." "We'll see," Scully laughed. "We'll see who they will take after." They were interrupted by a knock. "I wonder who could that be," Mulder wondered. "It can't be Skinner. He knows that we are leaving for Los Angeles tomorrow." "Hold that thought," Scully replied, as carefully put down little Dana, and she opened the door. It was Kristen Kilar, one of Melissa's New Age friends. "Hello Kristen. I guess that you heard." She knew the young brunette as a friend of her sister's. "About Missy." "Any news?" "No," Scully sighed. She looked at Mulder. "Fox?" "Hello Kristen," Mulder smiled to one of Melissa Scully's friends. "No, there isn't any news, but I do have a theory." "He always has theories. Would you like to hear it?" Scully asked. Kristen nodded. "When I found out about Missy, I had to leave Los Angeles. I do have some information on the Trinity murders, and I heard that you and your husband are working on the case...." She paused, looking at the portable crib. "You had the babies!" "Yes, we did," Scully smiled. "The one in the pink floral print is little Dana Katherine Mulder, and the one in the yellow floral print is little Emily Samantha." "They are adorable," Kristen remarked, smiling. She turned to face Mulder. "You look as though you have lost someone." Her brown eyes darkened somewhat, and Mulder was speechless at Kristen's perspective. "How did you know that?" "Like Missy, I have my ways," Kristen sighed. She sat down on a chair. "Well?" "Yes, I did lose someone. My sister, Samantha. I was twelve years old when she disappeared. She was eight," Mulder sighed. "I never stopped looking for her." He paused. "I wish that both Samantha and Melissa were here to see the twins. My sister loved babies, and I'm sure that she would have loved to see Emily and Dana." "We will find her and Missy too," Scully replied. She gave her husband an assuring hug. "I know we will." Mulder smiled at his wife's confidence. "I hope so." "You'll find them," Kristen replied. "I know you will."
